What is the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill is actually a two-pill regimen approved by the FDA for use in women up to 10 weeks after their last menstrual period (LMP).  The first pill is called mifepristone and the second is called misoprostol. The mifepristone pill is taken orally to block your body’s natural production of progesterone. This causes the death of the embryo. Approximately 48 hours later, the misoprostol is taken. This causes heavy cramping and bleeding and aborts the embryo out of your uterus.

What are the Side Effects and Risks of the abortion pill?

The more intense side effects start after you take the second abortion pill. Side effects and risks of the abortion pill include:

●      Heavy bleeding with large blood clots

●      Heavy cramping and pain

●      Nausea

●      Diarrhea, Vomiting

●      Headache, Dizziness

●      Infection, Chills/Fever

Before Taking the Pill…

  • Make an appointment at The Women’s Center Illiana to get a pregnancy test. Even if you had a positive at-home pregnancy test, it’s always good to get a second test by a medical professional.
  • Have the pregnancy confirmed with an ultrasound at one of our Centers. The ultrasound can confirm how far along you are and if the pregnancy is viable.
  • Get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at The Women’s Center Illiana to prevent damage and the spread of infection.
